In the past two weeks we have welcomed over 150 primary school pupils to Prestonpans, to pilot our new schools sessions. Developed by curator Dr Arran Johnston and education officer Sharon Beck, the sessions combine a walking tour of the battlefield with a workshop and gallery visit at the museum itself.

The pilot sessions, with pupils from two schools in Edinburgh and the Lothians, followed a successful teachers’ symposium at the museum last month.

All the pupils had a wonderful time exploring both the battlefield and the museum, combining different techniques and experiences to stimulate interest and reinforce the learning.

We are now open for school group bookings, and are delighted to have already booked our first visit for next term. Any teacher wishing to find out more about our learning offer should contact us by email: sbeck@battleofprestonpans1745.org

“Captain” Johnston takes P5 pupils from Longniddry on a tour of the battlefield ahead of their workshop at the museum.
At the museum, pupils examine the battlefield diorama and see how the landscape they’ve just visited looked in 1745.
